The World is Flat – Apps for Cosmopolitans

Mar 23, 2010

Must-have apps for communicating and living in a global world. Do you have others? Please add in the comments.

When you’re sending money to fix the roof on your house in Bali, use this app to easily convert dollars into rupiah. Or choose more than 100 currencies to convert.

iTimeZone – World Clocks Calculator

Set the city you’re in and choose a city across the world, and this app will display the time in both places. A nifty feature is that you can look up past and future times as well – so you won’t be late to your meeting at the Guangzhou factory to create a prototype for your new product.

Skype for iPhone

Free calls to your friends with Skype wherever they are from Zimbabwe to Brussels – ridiculously cheap rates if you use Skype to call a landline or mobile phone. Also send low-cost SMS messages.

QTranslator – the ultimate translator !

For those of us who flip from English to Spanish to French to Mandarin, or try to, this is a great app, at least for basic translations.

FlightTrack Pro – Live Flight Status Tracker by Mobiata

Of course you use Tripit, and fly frequently, and need to check flight status. Track flights by flight # or route, or even shake to track a random flight if you’re really, really bored waiting in LAX or LHR.
