The Greedy Sponge iPhone game dries up after a few plays

The Greedy Sponge is a free iPhone app that soaks big time. The background graphics are very cool. In fact, they’re extremely surreal. Then there’s the music, which doesn’t seem like it would go with an arcade app. In many ways it sounds like The Orb, which is an English electronic music group known for its spiraling renditions of ambient house.

The game consists of four differently colored creature “thingies” that sit next to one another in rows, one on top of the other. They slowly cascade down the screen, increasing in speed the higher your score. The goal is to match at least five of these creatures together, which removes them, to create gaps. The ultimate goal to break up the rows so the “thingies” will drop into the sponge’s mouth. I played this a few times, and scored 20,000 points: enough to get my name on the top five list. The music is nice at first, but after a while, I just wanted to shut it off, though I did like the sound effects better. What I found out was that if I randomly tapped the brick of “thingies,” I scored much higher. However that wasn’t as much fun.

The game was enjoyable for the first few plays, but not as addicting as many other apps. I handed it off to my 11-year-old son for confirmation, and on a scale from 1-10, he gave it a 6. I think the secret to a lot of the really popular games is the incorporation of a leader board. This app only shows you the top five scores.
