Released just in time for New York Fashion Week, The Cut on the Runway app from the editors of The Cut blog and New York magazine brings the runway directly to your iPad. Whether you’re an aspiring Rachel Zoe or just a lover of all things fashion, you simply mustn’t go another day without The Cut app on your iPad — it’s that good.

Jam-packed with content, The Cut’s homepage is beautifully designed. Scroll through a selection of models from current runway shows in the main frame, or scroll through news pull from New York magazine’s website — the stories launch via an in-line browser, which means you can easily use the app to browse other New York content. In addition to images from all of the current shows, users have access to previous collections all the way back to spring 2005’s ready-to-wear and menswear offerings. You can browse shows by type, season and designer.

As Fashion Week nears, new shows are hitting the app (updates are promised within an hour of a show’s debut), and I was able to see videos of the top shows (so say The Cut’s editors), which played flawlessly over Wi-Fi. With the exception of videos, The Cut is designed only to work in portrait mode, but I appreciate the app’s magazine feel.

The Cut promotes user interaction by displaying its runway images full-screen, and asking users to rate the look a hit or miss. You can see how your vote compares, and see the best and the worst fashion offerings within the “100 Top Looks” and “100 Biggest Misses” sections. You can see how many looks you’ve rated across the top of the home screen, and the app makes sharing easy via Facebook Connect. The only feature I found lacking when flipping through looks was the inability to zoom in to see closer detail of the fashions.

The Cut on the Runway is an absolute must-have for anyone interested in fashion, and its free price tag makes for an even sweeter deal.
