The Best Turn-Based and Roguelike RPG Games you Must Have on your iPhone

Feb 23, 2017
Role Play

The RPG (as in Role Playing Game) genre has been around since the dawn of computer games and console games, although it first appeared in real life, way outside the boundaries of virtual realities. Those who are old enough to remember real-life role-playing masterpieces such as The Call of Cthulhu (based on H.P. Lovecraft’s bone-chilling Cthulhu mythos) or the pioneering granddaddy of all role playing games, Dungeons & Dragons, and were fortunate enough to play with the aforementioned or similar all-time classics, know very well that nothing can compare to the geeky excitement that these games bring. Cooking up a playable story using the tasty ingredients provided by the chosen role-playing universe requires immense, worthy-of-a-novelist level creativity from the storyteller, while the players have to employ well-though-out strategies, seamless cooperation, and constant communication in order to overcome the obstacles devised by the mischievously cunning storyteller. Although the context is completely different, the best turn-based and roguelike RPG games for iPhone bring about a geeky bliss that is almost identical to the experience that is so intrinsic in real-life role playing games. Since the turn-based and roguelike RPG game selection is as varied as the skillset of a level 100 uber-mage, we’ve put together a through compilation introducing the crème de la crème, all of which are capable of enchanting seasoned RPG veterans and RPG newbies alike while providing hours of fun for everyone from age 0 to 99 (and even beyond).

Wayward Souls

wayward

Carry on, my wayward son! Or soul. All right, let’s move, nothing to see here, people! Just a pathetic attempt at a bad joke that might not even be a joke. Anyway, Wayward Souls is a roguelike RPG (for the uninitiated: a dungeon-crawling RPG) boosted by never-before-seen amounts of replay value. As you begin your wayward journey, you have to select one of six characters (each having its own unique abilities, playstyle, and equipment arsenal), and fight your way through randomly generated levels – the very things that ensure the formerly mentioned replay value – in tactics-based combats in which a single move can make the difference between victory and defeat. Wayward Souls trots out 13 distinctively different areas with a wide range of bloodthirsty monsters, deadly traps, and strange encounters (though not of the third kind). As you’re progressing in the game, you’ll unlock new areas, and you’ll find power-boosting combinations that will increase your characters monster-butchering potential. Wayward Souls costs $6.99.

D&D Lords of Waterdeep

ddlords

We seriously hope you didn’t think that this turned-based and roguelike RPG compilation will go by without us paying homage to one of the Great Ones. Truth be told, Lords of Waterdeep, the turn-based Dungeons and Dragons role playing game at hand, has much more than nostalgic value – hence the awards galore it was showered with in 2013. As you probably have already guessed, the story is based in Waterdeep, the City of Splendors, a city run by a hiding-in-the-shadows type of secret society made up of masked Lords (Illuminati confirmed!). You play as one of these masked lords, and the goal is to recruit brave and skilled adventurers capable of completing dangerous tasks for you. The more tasks your adventurer squad aces, the more control and influence you’ll have over the city, and thus the closer you’ll get to defeat opposing Lords and become the ultimate puppet master of Waterdeep. The turned-based gameplay consists of 8 rounds, during which you can go up against AI opponents or up to 5 human, nonhuman, and undead players (with the Scoundrels of Skullport expansion, that number goes up to 6). During the 8 rounds, players take turns assigning tasks to their agents, tasks such as recruiting new adventurers or purchasing new buildings to extend the city and plant the seeds of new opportunities. You earn points and resources by completing quests, constructing new buildings, having your rivals utilize the buildings you’ve constructed, and by playing Intrigue cards, which are sure to make the lives of opposing masked Lords a little miserable. When the 8 rounds are done and over with, each player is awarded bonus points, and the masked Lord who has amassed the highest score wins the game and takes control over Waterdeep. D&D Lords of Waterdeep costs $6.99, and has two expansions (Undermountain Expansion and Skullport Expansion), each for $2.99.

Legend of Grimrock

log

Legend of Grimrock is a grim dungeon-crawling RPG with a nostalgia-inducing old school feel and a modern execution. Speaking of execution, according to the story, a group of prisoners are exiled to Mount Grimlock, the equivalent of a death sentence. What their captors are unaware of are Mount Grimlock’s ancient tunnels, hidden dungeons, and secret tombs, built and left behind by long-gone civilizations. Unfortunately for the ragtag group of prisoners, the road to freedom leads through those very tunnels, dungeons, and tombs, and through a series of deadly traps and flocks of bone-chillingly hideous beasts. Legend of Grimrock features deep character customization, as you can select the race, the class, the skills and the personality traits of all four members of your dungeon-crawling quartet. The grid-based movement is a lovely touch of vintage magic, though the real throwback feel is embodied by the Oldschool Mode: it disables the automap, meaning you have to bring out the pen and a nice little stack of grid paper, just like in the good old days. Legend of Grimrock costs $4.99, and is a must-have for all gamers who were lucky enough to experience the golden age of real-life RPG games.
