Tapic is a free rhythm game that attempts to take the genre one step further by allowing the user to tap the beat to their own songs. With a polished user interface and an already popular concept, it succeeds in being an entertaining game. However, there are a few issues that come with its first release.

Just like every other rhythm game, the purpose is to accurately tap on the dots that scroll from the top of the screen to the bottom. The more accurate you are, the higher the multiplier gets, and the higher your overall score becomes.  The concept is simple, and if you’ve played TapTap Revenge before, then you’ll feel right at home with this game. The edge that Tapic has over other similar titles is the fact that you can tap the beat to songs you have on your iPod. The app will analyze the song, and create the dots that go along with the beat. The game has no preloaded songs, so the entire experience is made up of your own favorite music.

Testing on an iPhone 4, the gameplay was fluid and absent of any bugs or lag. However, the problem arises in the accuracy of the dots’ placement with the beat of the music. Overall, the app does a great job, but there are times when the dots just don’t feel like they are placed at the right times in a song. Sometimes, you’ll get the feeling that things are just a bit off. There were moments when it seemed as though the dots were randomly placed. This was most evident at the end of a song when there were dots all over the place, but the music was simply a fading chord.

Tapic is absolutely a game you should check out. While not perfect, it’s only in its beginning stages. It will only get better.
