Stay on top of your celebrity buzz with these iPhone apps

Between Lindsay Lohan’s courthouse appearances and Mel Gibson’s baby mama drama, it is no easy feat staying abreast of all the fodder that the entertainment world has to offer.

Yes, it is a dirty job, but somebody has to do it. And with the help of these top celebrity-related iPhone apps, that somebody may as well be you. So sit back and get ready to enjoy an unending stream of hookups and breakups; stuff that’s way juicier anything you will find on the big screen.

All apps are free unless otherwise indicated.

First on our list is the E! Online app, which offers a nice mix of text, still photos and video. There is plenty of content straight from the E! television shows, so if the “The Soup” or “Chelsea Lately” is your thing, go crazy. The app’s best feature, however, is the customized celebrity list. Create a list of the celebrities that most interest you, and then the app will troll the world of celebrity gossip for related tidbits and feed them to you.

The People app ($1.99) is another great place to start as you  assemble your celebrity-themed iPhone apps. It doesn’t have as many videos as the E! Online app, but the format is great. There are tons of large pictures of celebrities going about their days; the exact thing that made the magazine so successful in the first place.

Ever since the website broke the news of Michael Jackson’s death, TMZ has held the title as top celebrity gossipmonger. Similarly, the TMZ app is shameless in its coverage of Hollywood DUIs, drug busts and divorces. TMZ reports on the wash-ups and has-beens with as much enthusiasm as the A-listers, so be prepared for a good dose of smut.

Of course, this list wouldn’t be complete without an homage to Perez Hilton and his Perez app (99 cents). Perez tags his app “Gossip on the Go,” and revels in the weird and obscene. Among current items in the app are “Jack White’s Creep Taxidermy Obsession” and references to Amy Winehouse as “Wino.” This app also consolidates all Perez tweets into one running feed.

If you are less of a television/movies person and more of a music person, then download the MTV News app. It is chock full of rock star antics, as well as scheduled award shows and concert appearances.

Twitter is the latest evolution in celebrity self promotion – some have made a career out of it (Kim Kardashian, Spencer Pratt). If you want to test your knowledge of celebrity Twitter feeds, checkout the Poptweets app. It allows you to guess which celebrity tweeted what, as well as allowing you re-tweet your favorites.

Lastly, if knowing about your favorite celebrities doesn’t satisfy you, then its time to get to know their offspring. The Celebrity Baby Trivia app allows you to read up on the entertainment world’s children and then test your knowledge. You will have Brad and Angelina’s brood down pat in no time.
