There are any number of purposes that iPhone apps serve. They can help you manage your life, provide breaking news and even entertain you from time to time. Then there is Spin the Coke, which is a blatant ad and waste of time.

Aside from marketing, the only real purpose of the Spin the Coke app is apparently to take you back to your first kiss. This of course assumes that spin the bottle led you to that first kiss.

The free app from Coca-Cola offers two bottles and five backgrounds to choose from. Once you decide between those, you spin the bottle. And, well, that’s it. Nothing else to see here. More of a commercial than an actual game.

I am sure some will find Spin the Coke cute, and if this does help you to remember that first kiss or even help you break the ice and get that first kiss then more power to you. But the curmudgeon in me just wonders what the point is.

The app looks nice and the price is right, but I do not see it being the kind of thing you will get much use out of. It would be a cool feature as part of a larger app, but as a standalone application it’s just plain empty.
