Run Yourself Into Shape

Here are several apps to make your running journey that much easier.

Run Trainer (iOS, Android)

Run Trainer is a training app rather than a tracking app, allowing you to set varying levels of difficulty or challenge, for example train to run 5K or even 10K. The great benefit of this app is you can plan a schedule that fits you. It also works with music apps such as Spotify – it even dims the music for audio support.

Zombies, Run! (iOS, Android)

Zombies, Run! is another great way to keep you motivated when running. The living dead are pretty in right now, and what better way to motivate yourself than an augmented reality gamified running app where the goal is to outrun hordes of zombies and accomplish side missions? Any sane person is going to run all that faster and better if they fear zombies are about to rip them to shreds. All the better, it is a full storied game. Just bring your imagination along, and run for your life! There’s never been a better way to keep you moving fast!

Get Running (iOS, Android)

Get Running is another training app that focuses on getting you to run 5k. The sheer benefit of this app is the ability to decide whether to train using distance or time. This is a really good option when you have a limited amount of time for each workout. At the start of using the app, you can select your current running skill and it automatically creates a 9 week workout plan for you. It’s also super rewarding through its design layouy. You can see all the progress you’ve made for your future runs.

Runtastic (iOS, Android)

Runtastic is a great app that allows you to personally tailor your running experience to you. Not only can it track your workouts, it can even Track the shoes that you wear for each run, so that you can finally know how many miles you have run in your shoes. It even has very active community, allowing friends to send you messages while running to cheer you on.

Strava Running and Cycling GPS (iOS, Android)

My favorite feature for this free app is that you can compare your progress and milestones against your friends, making exercise more competitive. You can even see how you match up against PRO runners!

Run with Map My Run (iOS, Android)

There’s a reason iMapMyRun is one of the highest rated running apps in the App Store. It has so many features for FREE, like Elevation, Calories burned, and optional stuff like Heart Rate stats and the ability to brag on Facebook and Twitter.

Couch to 5K® (iOS, Android)

This app was made for people just starting out who strive for gradual improvement. It’s like having a running coach in the palm of your hand.

Nike + Running (iOS, Android)

This really is the ultimate app for running. With this app you can map your running routes, keep track of your progress, and more. There’s even a unique social feature that simulates a crowd cheering whenever your friends like your running posts.

Nike Running is by far the easiest to use. You can color codes your run based on your speed, as well as collecting badges for different runs, like for example a badge for running your first 10K.

The app has a level system, where you work your way up the levels the more you run. Each level has a color linked to it and this determines the background color on the main tracking screen, making the whole experience colorful and interesting.
