Roadside America iPhone app makes road tripping a more interesting experience

Want to take a road trip centered on zombie “artifacts”? Or maybe it’s your goal to see every muffler man in America. Perhaps you’re simply a fan of weird,  offbeat, hilarious or downright stupid roadside attractions. You’re in luck — the people behind RoadsideAmerica.com, who have been finding crazy tourist attractions for 25 years, have launched the Roadside America iPhone app.

Let’s get this out of the way: To see all of the roadside attractions in the United States, you will need to spend $8.98. With the download price of $2.99, users get to select one of six regions. This selection is not reversible, so choose wisely (I went with the Midwest). To unlock the other five regions, it’ll cost you an additional $5.99 per year, payable through the iPhone app. And it is totally worth it.

Roadside America contains a plethora of strange stuff to see, including the big, the small, the spooky, the religious, the natural, the unnatural and the historic, among many, many others. The iPhone app relies on your location to let you know of nearby sites, which is equally helpful when you’re on the road or sitting in your living room. You can also scope out the strange by city if you know where you’ll be passing through. Roadside America also includes browsing by more than 70 pre-created themes, including: Crime, dinosaurs, freaky hoo-ha, monsters, Route 66 and Zombie Army.

The complete Roadside America includes more than 6,000 roadside stops, with useful information such as: Tips, photos, addresses, telephone numbers, cost, directions and expert ratings on whether you should veer off the beaten path.
