If you want to race for first place, you can do that. But if you want to beat a timer, crash into other cars, or earn points for the best drifting, you can do all of that, too.

Race Illegal: High Speed 3D is a racing game for someone who isn’t entirely sure what they want out of their racing games, and that’s not such a bad thing. The racing is solid, if slightly unspectacular. As a driver, you only have to street, break, and hit the Nitro button. Acceleration is taken care of for you. But the real fun comes when the races get tight. Damage is handled excellently in Race Illegal. When you hit a car too hard, the screen goes red and you have to tap to get your car headed in the right direction. Your car will also drive differently depending on how badly you smash it up. For an app game, that’s a very cool feature.

Players who love to tune will be a bit disappointed. There are a small handful of generic upgrades that can be made to your car, but you won’t need a reminder that you’re not playing Gran Turismo. That said, there are so many races to get involved with in Race Illegal that the lack of tuning options seems more irrelevant than it otherwise would.

If you want a quick, fun arcade racer with a cool damage system, Race Illegal: High Speed 3D is worth checking out. It’s not the best-looking or the fastest, but it’s an awfully fun game.
