Playing Catch the Candy HD is easy as taking candy from a baby

Catch the Candy HD ($1.99) is a fun and simple puzzle/platformer app from the developer of Another World and Burn it All. This time, the action is cute, cuddly and quite a lot of fun.

The story behind this app is nearly non-existent. A furry purple fuzz ball wants his/her/its candy, and without any legs, is certainly going to need your help. Luckily, our hairy hero has an extraordinarily long tongue, and it is your job to find the best way to use it on each puzzle. This super slurper is the way our hero navigates the stage, as the sticky tip will cling to certain surfaces, and bounce off of others. Similarly, objects can be manipulated by the tongue as well, with wood or the round piece of candy sticking, while the metal blocks will instead be pushed around.

After playing through the entire app, the overall impression I’m left with is that of wanting more. I would love to see more difficulty, more level variety and, above all, more game! The experience was quite fun, and I was genuinely sad after finishing stage 80.

As far as the difficulty goes, it seemed like the developers only scratched the surface of what could be done in this app. Only a couple of stages gave me any trouble, and after I discovered the solution, they were very easy to repeat. This leads me to assume that the app is geared toward children, even though the description plainly states “easy to play, hard to master.”

In terms of variety, there were a few stages that were true gems and really quite memorable. The basketball court and the moonscape stages were fine examples of what the app could offer, and exhibited level design that “thinks outside the box.” More examples of this would surely catapult Catch the Candy HD from merely a good app to a great one.
