Play “guess the celeb” in a group environment with VH1 Celebrity Party

If I said Gilly, Target Lady or Bridesmaids would you know I was describing Kristen Wiig? If you got it right, you might be well-suited for VH1’s new app for iPhone called VH1 Celebrity Party. This charades-style game is designed for use in a party environment and requires a minimum of four players, but if you can get a group together this app could provide some quick entertainment.

VH1 Celebrity Party is reminiscent of Taboo, requiring players to guess a celebrity based on a description provided by a team member. The app supports up to six teams of a minimum of two players for the three-round play. To get started, you’ll need to select your mode of play — VH1 Celebrity Party supports pass ’n’ play on a single device, or users can enable multi-device, which supports Bluetooth, no passing required. Next, select your celebrity packs (there are five to choose from) or, if you’re using the premium version, create your own list of names — either celebrities or perhaps people you know.

Play is divided into three 90-second rounds. In the first round, players can use any descriptors or words to describe the provided celebrity, except for the celebrity’s name. In round two, celebrities must be described using two words. Round three drops speaking entirely, asking players to describe the celeb with charades only. If you get stumped, the app provides clues to help you with your description, however, this information is always the same, no matter what round you’re in. Each round also uses the same celebrity list. This seems redundant, and I would think it makes the game easier than it has to be.

VH1 Celebrity Party offers “prizes” for high scores, such as celebrity video clips. Some might enjoy these, but I doubt I would ever check my achievements if I used the app regularly since there’s no point to earning these.

A free version of VH1 Celebrity Party is available for single-device play and with a lesser number of celebrity packs. The app is well-designed, and at only a buck (and assuming you can find three others to participate) should provide at least one night of entertaining play.
