Plants vs Zombies HD comes of age with new update

PopCap Games, now a subsidiary of Electronic Arts, has been paying a lot of attention to iOS this year. They revamped Bejeweled, released Zuma’s Revenge and now they are breathing new life into iconic hit Plants vs Zombies HD.

This quirky tower defense game has enjoyed great success on iOS, but never delivered the full PC and Mac experience. Yesterday, however, a major update rolled out for the HD version, which ports most of what was missing. And there are a few new treats for iPhone and iPod touch players too.

The best news for fans is that the Zen Garden is now on iPad. Vasebreaker mode is also on board along with I, Zombie where you get to switch sides and play as the undead. The update includes four mini-games: Slot Machine, which is unlocked right away, along with Zombiquarium, Portal Combat and Beghouled Twist. Add 28 new achievements and five leaderboards and you’ve got hours of new gameplay. The only oversight is the lack of Retina display support the for the third generation iPad.

Most of the content is included in the free update if you already own the game, or comes with the purchase price of $9.99. That’s half the cost of the PC/Mac game and perhaps explains the push towards in-app purchases of game currency for the rest.

iPhone and iPod touch players, who can pick up Plants vs Zombies for $2.99, now have four new achievements, the Vasebreaker game and a Vasebreaker leaderboard.
