No need to double down on World Poker Tour iPhone app

Given the success of online poker, it only seems natural for the phenomenon to make its way to the iPhone. Yet while there are plenty of poker apps for the device, the number of them that offer the online experience may be fewer than you think.

And that’s the big selling point of World Poker Tour Texas Hold’Em – online play. Sure there are other features to this app, but the only reason for you to pay $3.99 for this game is the online mode.

While the game has the World Poker Tour brand and it begins with a flashy video, this app is surprisingly bland. The audio is very basic and gets annoying quickly. Further, the graphics are extremely poor and make the app look unprofessional.

There is a single player mode included also, along with a decent amount of options such as how many opponents you want to play against and how much you want the blinds to be. Although it doesn’t make sense not to include a single player mode, there are cheaper, better options if that is what you’re looking for.

World Poker Tour also includes a tips section and allows you to play music from your phone while the app is open. Both of these are nice additions and they really enhance the game.

The multiplayer function is done very well. Registering is quick and simple, and in my experience the online play was smooth and mostly flawless. There were also always at least a couple of people online during the times I played, and I was never left waiting.

If you are dying to play online poker on your iPhone and don’t mind spending four dollars to do so, then this app will satisfy. But personally, that’s too rich for my blood – I’ll fold and live to see another hand.
