Toast to the fall weather

Stave off the fall chill with a warm glass of cabernet during a day trip with friends through Napa Valley. Download the Napa Valley Wine Tour app ($2.99) to your phone for tips and information from local tour guides. The app includes maps, winery information, photos and inside information from folks who have visited these wineries thousands of times.

Or, head farther north for a trip filled with culture, wine and food in Washington wine country. The Yakima Valley My Perfect Days app ($4.99) promises trips to charming venues free of tourist traps.

Can’t get away for a wine road trip? Check out the $1.99 Wine Events app to find a local event near you.

Reap this season’s harvest

The Farm Fresh NYC app ($2.99) helps those residing in the five boroughs of the Big Apple to locate local harvests from farmers’ markets. The app also tells you what fruits and vegetables are in season, and even has the capability to create your grocery list.

Californians can download the free California Farmers’ Market Finder app to find similar information. This app is a database of more than 500 farmers’ markets. You can sort markets by distance, city and by day of the week that it is open. The Urban Market app (99 cents) originated to help residents of the Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas, area locate nearby farmers’ markets, but has expanded to include markets all over North America. Users can go to localurbanmarket.com to add market information to help build the database of apps.

More fall fun

If you are stuck in a region of the world without shifting fall colors, check out the Fall Colors iPhone app (99 cents). This photography app has 50 fabulous fall foliage images to flip through on your phone. The best way to play with leaves without raking.

If you have the means, though, head down to the Great Smoky Mountains to observe nature’s fall bounty for yourself with the Best of the Great Smoky Mountains app ($4.99). The app includes day hikes, self-guided nature tours, waterfall favorites and all the information you need to spend a few days in enjoying the outdoors before the snow falls.

Gear up for Halloween with the Pumpkins app (99 cents). Carve one of the 11 types of pumpkins with a touch of your finger, and then customize the lights and background. If you make a bad slice, no worries, it is really easy to put your virtual pumpkin back together with this app. Users can save multiple pumpkin carvings to your photo library to share with friends.
