New iPhone apps worth downloading: The Wall Street Journal update, WeHostels, Dishonored: Rat Assassin

Here are three great iPhone apps to enjoy. The Wall Street Journal app has finally gone universal and received some improvements in performance and functionality to boot. WeHostels offers a great way to find a hostel in numerous cities around the world, along with some clever social features. Last, but not least, we’ve got Dishonored: Rat Assassin, a game where you get to slice up some rats. Yikes!

The Wall Street Journal update (Free)

What’s it about? The WSJ app may have been around for a while, but it’s finally gone universal with one app offering for both iPhone and iPad.

What’s cool? Now there’s no need to download separate apps to each device now. Version 4 can be used on both iPhone and iPad. It also features faster downloads and performance improvements, more frequent news updates and 7-day archive downloads on demand.

Who is it for? Fans of the WSJ will appreciate the universal app. It still offers all the features users of the previous versions have long been enjoying like videos, commentary, market data and more. It should be noted, however, that not all content is available to non-subscribers, but they can still read non-keyed stories and view multimedia and market data.

What’s it like? Other heavyweight players in the world of financial news and analysis include Bloomberg Businessweek, Yahoo! Finance and of course newspapers like New York Times.

WeHostels (Free)

What’s it about? Regular hotels can be pretty expensive for many travelers. WeHostels helps you find reasonably-priced hostels everywhere.

What’s cool? WeHostels covers 80 cities in Europe, North America, South America, and southeast Asia, or you can browse a list of the top cities. You get a list of hostels and other affordable accommodations, as well as comments from the community about them. Make a booking and you’ll only be charged a 10 percent deposit to guarantee your spot.

Who is it for? WeHostels is great for people who want to make friends! That’s the rub with hostel accommodation, but the beauty of the app is that you can see who else is going to be there, share your common interests, and start connecting before you even arrive.

What’s it like? HI Hostels from Hosteling International offers online booking and customer ratings, while Hostels Sleep Easy provides a real-time search engine for low-cost hostels and B&Bs around the world. However, the social features of WeHostels set it apart.

Dishonored: Rat Assassin (Free)

What’s it about? Bethesda usually release PC and console games. This game is their first mobile offering and in it, you’ll get to slice rats in half. Lovely!

What’s cool? The game is actually a precursor to Bethesda’s upcoming first-person stealth title called Dishonored, due out in October for Windows, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It’s actually a neat take on Fruit Ninja, but instead of flying sweetness, you get to chop up rats and enjoy blood and guts splattering everywhere.

Who is it for? Clearly, the game is perfect training for any would-be supernatural stealth assassin!

What’s it like? The Fruit Ninja comparison is inevitable. There are other games with rats in them too, like Rat on a Skateboard, but that’s far, far cuter.
