Pixter Scan OCR ($0.99)

What’s it about? Turn your iOS devices into mobile scanners with Pixter Scan OCR, an app that lets you snap pictures and turn the words within them into usable text.

What’s cool? Pixter uses OCR, or optical character recognition, to transform pictures of text into editable documents. The app recognizes text in images, identifies it, and converts it for you so that you can make use of documents and other copy that you might have access to in hard copy form, but would otherwise have to type out in order to have it in another form. Pixter supports 32 different languages, and allows you to save the text you extract as digital notes that you can edit, save for later or share with others through email, social networks or cloud services such as DropBox. Pixter can also act as a translator for recognized languages to help you convert text from one format to another.

Who’s it for? Business people, students, and anyone else who can benefit from quickly scanning words and turning them into usable text files will find Pixter indispensable.

What’s it Like? More apps for scanning documents include Doc Scan and Perfect OCR.

Gemini Rue ($3.99)

What’s it about? Point-and-click adventure title Gemini Rue is a sci-fi noir game set in the future, in which players take on the role of a detective and a man who awakens in a research facility with no memory of who he is.

What’s cool? Taking Gemini Rue is a member of the “adventure” genre, which means it focuses more on story than on things like action. Players interact with the game through dialogue with other characters, and by finding and using objects in the environment to solve puzzles as they progress. The story follows two men – one, a former assassin searching for someone, and the other called Delta-Six, who finds himself in a strange facility with amnesia.

Who’s it for? Fans of the adventure genre, sci-fi works such as Blade Runner and good stories should check out Gemini Rue.

What’s it like? Check out Yesterday and Beneath a Steel Sky for more great adventure stories.

Rayman Jungle Run update ($2.99)

What’s it about? Puzzle-platformer Rayman Jungle Run uses some of the conventions of running titles – like constant motion and quick reflexes – along with great level design to make a fun and challenging arcade title.

What’s cool? Borrowing characters from Ubisoft’s Rayman series of games, Rayman Jungle Run puts players in the floating shoes of Rayman and sends them careening through jungle levels. You’ll need to dodge spikes, fly through the air, jump off walls and more to get through each stage with the maximum number of points available, a challenge that’s pretty addictive and leads to a lot of replayability. The good news is that the latest update to Rayman Jungle Run throws in 20 more levels to enjoy, so if you’ve already wrung out every bit of challenge from the game, it’s time to get back into it.

Who’s it for? If you like platformers and running titles, you’ll like Rayman Jungle Run – it’s one of the best in the genre.

What’s it like? League of Evil and Meganoid are a pair of great platformers that are also worth your attention.
