My Taptu iPhone app a flat social reader

My Taptu is a free social reader for the iPhone. I’ve seen a bunch of these types of apps, and they all promise you great access to all your favorite web sites, all on one page. Unfortunately, My Taptu falls short as it tries to measure up to more-popular apps, such as what Flipboard does on the iPad. I was fairly unimpressed with the layout. Flipboard is sexy, much like the iPad. Sorry folks, but My Taptu just doesn’t do it for me.

Call me picky, but one of the reasons I have an iPhone in the first place is that it goes with me almost everywhere I go. So the idea of this app sounds promising, but  My Taptu falls short on several fronts. For one: Many of the logos of the streams were unrecognizable or too small to see. Much of the teaser text was truncated and uninteresting, and aside from a larger point size for the headlines, it was barely distinguishable from the truncated text. I also didn’t like that the app pre-populates your screen with streams. I believe the NFL was one of the streams it gave me, and there was just too much redundancy across the category. There were at least 10 articles on the Cardinals’ victory over the Cowboys. What I would have liked to have seen is one really good article on the game, with other highlights of the day’s sports. The last thing I need is redundancy and articles clogging my limited iPhone space.

What I found myself doing, was to delete all of the streams, and start fresh. The snippets, however, are short and boring. The layout needs a lot of work in order for it to compare with such great apps as Flipboard on the iPad. I didn’t find much to like about this app.
