MoviePass – A Deal Too Good to be True?

With the introduction of MoviePass, these issues are effectively alleviated so that watching the latest movies in theatre is more accessible.[sc name=”quote” text=”Users can watch any movie that they want once a day for $10 with the MoviePass app and card”]

Created by the cofounders of Netflix, MoviePass allows users to watch an unlimited number of movies at the theatre for $10/month. With the subscription, users receive a card at which point they can go to the movie theatres once a day for as many days as they want. While this may seem too good to be true, statistics and surveys indicate that an average person only goes to the movies 5-6 times a year, so the company can still remain profitable if users go to the movies less than 12 times a year.  As the price of a movie ticket is already over $10, subscribing to this program seems logical from a financial standpoint. Furthermore, movies tickets can be bought on MoviePass so that users can simply select the theatre, movies, and time that they are interested in without ever having to leave the app.

Despite the deal that is offered by MoviePass, the program is still in its early stages and is only available in select theatres across the New York area. Upon the successful test of the program, it can be extrapolated that many theatres will also adopt this approach which would significantly change the existing system of going to the movies. Beyond this, there has been so much demand for the tickets that the website is often inaccessible given the significant amount of traffic that it receives.

However, few limitations currently exist with the program. For example, only regular movies can be seen which excludes 3D and IMAX movies from the MoviePass selection. Furthermore, movie tickets can only be bought on the day of the showing which means that movie tickets cannot be reserved a day in advance with the app. Beyond this, only once card can be used per person while the biggest potential limitation is that a particular movie can only be seen once with app. Although this may not be an issue for some, others who would like to see a movie multiple times a day may find this limitation to be a significant drawback of MoviePass.[sc name=”quote” text=”Despite the deal that is offered by MoviePass, the program is still in its early stages and is only available in select theatres across the New York area.”]

Available on both iOS and Android, users can see any movie that they want once a day for $10 with the MoviePass app and card. For a “too-good-to-be-true” deal when going to the movies, the app is highly recommended for those who go to the movie theater more than 12 times a year. For those who go less than 12 times a year, it may be less economical and should therefore be avoided. Regardless of how many times a user goes, MoviePass is likely to change the movie industry just as Netflix has changed the rental business.
