The Mix Me In iPhone app ($1.99) is the wave of the future. It’s your chance to perform your favorite songs along with the bands you love, record it, save it, and then share it with a community full of people doing the same thing. This iPhone app comes with four pre-loaded hits and allows you to listen to original and acoustic versions of each; there’s even a dance track option for Rick James’ “Superfreak.” From there, you can isolate individual instruments and adjust to your liking.

Want to record your own vocals to the Pink song, “So What?” Add bass where there isn’t any, or rock out on your own drum set to an acoustic mix of Hinder’s popular “Lips of an Angel?” You can with this iPhone app. Once you’ve recorded something you like (for example, a vocal track), you can follow each song’s lyrics as they scroll along the bottom of the screen—you get to choose an avatar singer to represent you, and you can even process and add effects to your vocal tracks.

The Mix Me In iPhone app seems almost too good to be true. Because it is. It claims to be “much more than karaoke,” but there’s only so much it can do on its own. As stated earlier, it only comes with four songs, so it’s up to you to buy whatever additional songs you want at 99 cents a pop. Not bad, but not all that great, either. A headset microphone is required for first generation iPhones and the iPod Touch. Mix Me In might be more than karaoke, but the batteries are not all included.
