Love sports and new to the iPhone? Check out these apps

Jun 20, 2016

There are so many sports apps available for the iPhone and iPod touch, it can be a challenge to find what you want.

Sports fans are an obsessive bunch, of course. Their appetite for scores, stats and mindless entertainment is unrivaled. But with an iPhone, even the most avid sports junkies can call their own plays and access up-to-date information about their favorite teams, players and games.

So where do we begin? Here’s a primer of useful iPhone apps to provide the latest score or improve your fantasy squad.

Live scoring

It is becoming increasingly difficult to talk about sports without mentioning ESPN. Apps for the iPhone are not immune from this phenomenon. ESPN ScoreCenter gives you live scores from games in more than 500 leagues    around the world. Want to follow the Red Sox vs. Yankees game one second, and get an update on your favorite rugby team th/apps/51828-espn-scorecentee next? Then look no further than this free app.

Yahoo’s answer to ScoreCenter is Yahoo Sports, formerly called Sportacular. While this free app does not cover as many leagues, it does provide standings and stats that you will not find in the ESPN app. Maybe you can wait for the score of the big cricket match.

Baseball fans can follow their sport with At Bat. In addition to the live scoring, this app offers live audio and even streams a limited number of live games daily – though blackout restrictions apply. And if you subscribe to MLB.TV you can watch all the live games.
