Learn some new words each day with Vocabology iPhone app

It is shamefully easy to get into a rut with your vocabulary. Without really trying, you could communicate exactly what you need to by using the same handful of phrases you’ve been relying on for years.

Vocabology does a great job challenging users to not only learn several new words each day, but to apply them to their lives as soon as possible through quizzes and social media. All the better to get your new words to stick in your brain.

The source list for the word-of-the-day feature is pretty admirable. Not content to just pull up Merriam-Webster and Dictionary.com (though those are both included) and call it a day, you’ll also learn a new French, Italian, German and Portuguese word each day. Plus, a word from the Urban Dictionary, which is usually a bit more fun and sometimes even just as illuminating.

Each word has a definition and an audio playback feature, and you can “favorite” words for easier callback later. There’s also a button that lets you create a sentence using your new word and post it to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr or email.

As good as those features are, the quiz is probably the best aspect of Vocabology. At any time, you can take a test that will grill you only on words you’ve seen within the Vocabology app. Once you’ve been using the app for a few weeks, the quizzes get a bit harder because they have more words to pull from, but they’re still fun, even if you just downloaded the app and gave it a quick spin.

My biggest frustration with Vocabology is that although it’s very cool that the app keeps a running history of the words it has shown you, you’re not able to see the history for days that you didn’t use the app. It’s hardly a dealbreaker, but it wouldn’t be a bad feature to find in an update.

If you’re tired of using the same old words and feel like you’re in a rut with your vocabulary, Vocabology could be right up your alley. With 11 new words a day, it certainly won’t make your vocab any worse.
