Having just become a proud owner of a hand-me-down ukulele, I am excited to start learning how to play it. Since I can’t afford lessons, I turned to the Internet. YouTube and Google are full of tutorials, but the iPhone is a great teacher too!

Learning how to play the ukulele? This app is a full-featured ukulele chord dictionary with access to over 1,000 of the most common chord forms in all 12 keys.

Scale Buddy

This app provides scales for the ukulele and many other instruments. Select the key and the scale and it displays all the notes in that scale.

Ukulele Tuner

Tuning your ukulele can be a difficult task, especially if you’re just getting started. This app helps (and before you know it, you won’t even need an app!) This app makes tuning easy. Just touch the note for the string you want to tune, listen and then turn the tuning pegs on your ukulele and match it up with the note being played.

Ukulele Chord Kumu

This is similar to UkeChords, but it has a bit more flair. It’s also a great app for lefties! It automatically reverses the strings and fingerings for every chord. It also has a built-in pitch pipe.

This is a great app for beginners. It features 4 lessons covering tuning, plucking, strumming and playing three easy one-finger chords. It also offers recordings of 3 songs to play along with, 4 color-coded chord diagrams and a ukulele tuner.
