iRugby iPhone app fails to best the free alternatives

The English Premiership, also called the Guinness Premiership (the beer sponsors the league), is a 12-team rugby league in England that is regarded as the top rugby league in the country. Have I ever mentioned how glad I am that we’ve got Wikipedia?

Admittedly I’m not all that knowledgeable about the sport. But I do know a good app when I see one, and iRugby – Guinness Premiership is not a good app.

It’s also not an entirely terrible app. The 99-cent effort from Duchy Software has a sleek look and it only has one serious fault. Unfortunately, that fault is a lack of content, and that’s never a good thing with apps like this.

The app has four sections: results, fixtures (schedule), table (standings) and news. The news feed is from BBC Sport and the articles open within the app.

Just having the bare necessities might be okay if there weren’t any other options. And though there aren’t all that many rugby apps available, Guinness Premiership Rugby offers the exact same features and it is a free download.

Furthermore, if you’re just looking for scores, ScoreCenter provides live scoring for the league and other rugby leagues and tournaments as well. Not that anyone’s counting, but that’s two free alternatives to this less-than-stellar app.

The groundwork has already been set for a good app. If iRugby added something like a video section or, more simply, more content in any way, I would wholeheartedly recommend it to fans of the sport.

As it stands now, though, there’s not enough here. The app is brand new, so hopefully we can get an update with more content. But until that happens, there’s no way to justify even spending as little as a dollar on this app.
