iPhone Apps Worth Downloading: Lightt, Check the Weather, Walking Dead: The Game Episode 3

Take to the weekend with a new way to socially share events in your life with Lightt, the first of today’s new apps. Also great for the weekend is Check the Weather, which will help you get instant information about the forecast with a simple interface. Finally, return to the zombie apocalypse with the newly released episode of Telltale Games’ Walking Dead: The Game.

Lightt (Free)

What’s it about? Sharing moments. Lightt makes it easy to share images with friends and followers, but with several photos taken during a 10-second frame, rather than a single image or a video. You can then share these “highlights” through Lightt’s social network, or through Facebook and Twitter.

What’s cool? Lightt’s preferred presentation is not to take a single image and mess with it, like Instagram, or shoot videos and share those like other social networks. Instead, the burst of photos taken during the 10-second time frame is played back at a higher speed, creating a flip book effect. It’s an interesting change and makes for some cool, slightly weird highlights of events happening in friends’ and followers’ lives.

Who’s it for? Social networkers will probably find some use for Lightt, and even if you don’t have a lot of friends on the service, you can still connect your highlights to your Facebook and Twitter feeds and share them that way.

What’s it like? Instagram remains one of the more popular ways to share images, while apps such as SocialCam make sharing video easy. You can also do many of the same things with Facebook Camera and Twitter.

Check the Weather ($1.99)

What’s it about? Check the Weather specializes in weather – and simplicity. It packs a bunch of weather data, but keeps the focus narrow. You can check the extended forecast for areas all over the world, view current temperatures and conditions, and get other quick information to plan your day.

What’s cool? The beauty of Check the Weather is in how simple (and beautiful) it is. The interface is clean and uncluttered; flipping between the immediate rain outlook, the extended forecast and the day’s weather events are done with simple swipes in certain directions. Check the Weather keeps the excess noise out by providing only basic, useful information in a great interface.

Who’s it for? Anybody who could use their weather information in a quick, easy-to-read format.

What’s it like? Just about any other weather app available will give you the same information as Check the Weather, and if you want more information, The Weather Channel is handy, as is Weather+.

Walking Dead: The Game Episode 3 ($4.99)

What’s it about? The third episode in Telltale Games’ adventure title based on the comic series of the same name, The Walking Dead is a phenomenal game with awesome writing. Players balance puzzle-solving and speaking with other characters with the occasional action-packed zombie attack.

What’s cool? Things go (even more) nuts in Episode 3 of The Walking Dead. The continuing story of a group of survivors as they battle zombies, bandits and starvation, the game does a great job of balancing big, shocking moments and slow-burn, emotional character development. The writing is top-notch, the story is engaging, and even the action portions work surprisingly well.

Who’s it for? Certainly not for kids – The Walking Dead is pretty adult in its subject matter and occasionally pretty graphic, despite being rendered like a comic book. If you’re a fan of adventure games and serious zombie fiction, though, you should definitely have a look.

What’s it like? The earlier episodes of The Walking Dead are required to fully enjoy Episode 3 (they’re all available as in-app purchases in the same app), and if you like them, you’ll like Telltale’s other games, like Puzzle Agent and Sam & Max. Other quality adventure games on iOS include Yesterday, which has a similar dark tone: that one’s about a serial killer.
