As Hurricane Earl nears the East Coast, flood warnings and evacuations have started. But hurricanes can be tricky to predict accurately, as Earl illustrates. At first, this storm was considered a minor threat; now it appears poised to do major damage from North Carolina to Nantucket.
As you’d expect, there are a number of apps available to help track the storm as well as provide guidance on how to prepare if you’re in the storm’s path.
Here’s a rundown:
Hurricane: This $3.99 app provides historical data on damages from storms’ past as well as providing updates on current storms. There’s an iPad app, too. Hurricane includes tracking maps, satellite views and countless other data points to keep storm watchers current on Earl’s path.
Hurricane Tracker: This more affordable 99-cent app (really, does $2 matter if you’re in the path of a massive storm?) has recently been updated to include audio feeds of storm updates. The maps, however, don’t appear as interesting or as detailed as the app it mimics, Hurricane.
iHurricane with Push: This free app sends location-based hurricane alerts to your phone that essentially tells you how far you are from the eye of the storm. Since it’s free, I’d give this one a try.
Hurricane Supply List: Hey, if you’re in a hurry to get out of the house, having a handy list to help speed the process can’t hurt. This 99-cent app includes lists for things you may need before, during and after a storm.
