iPhone Apps to Get You Through A Move

Apr 25, 2010

Moving can be stressful. There’s a lot to remember and keep track of, which means there’s a lot you can forget or lose. These apps will act as your personal assistant, from finding an apartment, to packing, unpacking and furnishing your new digs.

Apartment Guide – Apartments for Rent

ApartmentGuide lets you search through thousands of apartment listings in either a list or interactive map view. You can also use your GPS to find available apartments in your area. Features include floorplans, photos and contact information so you can call or email the property manager.

Apartments.com – Apartment Rental Search – Search Apartments, Homes, Condos and Townhomes For Rent. Find a New Apartment to Call Home. List your Rental for Free and Manage your Rental Listing on Apartments.com

You can search by GPS, city/state or zip code. It includes detailed search filters that allow you to sort by number of bedrooms, bathrooms, price, pet policy, parking, availability and more. Other features include photos, floorplans, walk-through videos and property manager contact information. Best part: you can save your searches for future reference.

Moving Van

Moving Van makes it easy to identify the contents of every box you pack. You detail the contents, take photos of the items and assign each box a unique name or number. Later you can search for an item and find it right away. You can also assign the contents to a room in your new apartment.

This app helps you make sure that your move goes smoothly. It offers a time line of tips and to-dos starting weeks before a move and leads up to the night before and day-of. It also includes packing and cleaning tips, arranging storage, hiring a moving company, and de-cluttering tips.

EveryBlock uses your phone’s GPS to pinpoint related nearby crime reports, entertainment options, news stories from local sources and even real-estate listings. I’m nosy and like knowing what’s happening in my neighborhood – especially if it’s a neighborhood I’m thinking about moving to!

SwedeShop–Unofficial IKEA Shopping List

Once you move, you’ll need to furnish your apartment. The go-to place is IKEA. With this app, you can keep track of aisle number, bin number, product name, color and price. The best part is that you can set a budget (including local tax) and keep track of how much you’re spending before you even hit the check out line.

IKEA Catalogue 2010 UK

I realize this is a UK app, but if anything it’s great for some inspiration. You can view over 375 pages of IKEA-y goodness. Flick through the pages or browse through thumbnails. Unfortunately, you’ll need to be connected to wifi and it doesn’t have a store locator or bookmark feature. Boo-urns.
