iPhone App Video Review: Roar Rampage

Games with deep stories and intricately crafted worlds are nice, but sometimes you just want to smash the ever-loving out of everything as a giant Godzilla monster wearing boxing gloves. FDG Entertainment and Neutronized have brought us that exact game, Roar Rampage, and it is pretty glorious, with very retro sensibilities but unique, modern touch gameplay.

In Roar Rampage, you control the monster’s right arm, which you will use to jab and cross any buildings and enemies that get in your way into exploded jelly. Various enemy aircraft, tanks on the ground, and soldiers shooting outside of building windows make up your fist fodder. As you’re attacked constantly from every angle, you’ll have to block dangerous projectiles with your fist. There are loads of power-ups, from fire, ice, and lightning fists to power fists, to fists that give you double the gems. More on those in a bit. I especially loved the improvised weaponry. From massive wrecking balls to monorails to giant tomahawk statues, to the spinal cords of long dead Godzilla creatures; there are plenty of cool ways to dispatch your foes. The physics on the whip-style weapons are surprisingly realistic, too.

Gems can be used to buy one-off upgrades at a reasonable price, such as the various fist power-ups or health packs to be used at any time. The items that you’ll really want though, such as accessories, tattoos, and that awesome Mecha-Godzilla costume, will cost an arm and a leg. I know, they’re only cosmetic, so it shouldn’t matter, but that’s the kind of stuff gamers want to be able to unlock.

The only real flaw with this game is just how repetitive it is. Granted, if you only play it for bite-sized sessions, you’ll probably be fine with it. I should hate this game for how repetitive it is, but I just can’t. The fantastic upbeat soundtrack, wanton destruction and carnage, fun bonus games, epic boss fights, and hilarious Wilhelm screams that you’ll constantly hear just create this perfect storm of awesome, making it easy to overlook the flaws. Who built those giant score multiplier buttons at the end of each level? It doesn’t matter in the slightest. This game is just fun for the sake of fun, and it’s great in that way.
