Vertical shooters are somewhat of a favorite of mine and every time a new one becomes available for my phone, I love testing them out. The latest to grace the App Store is a game called Phoenix. It’s a vertical shooter that brings a super-intense experience to the device for an extremely cheap price.

Unlike most vertical shooters, Phoenix does not follow a set story or offer a carefully crafted level experience. Instead, every battle is generated on the spot with the game creating custom enemies and powerups as you play through the game. This means each encounter is going to be different. There is also no set end. The app is more of a survival mode that challenges you to see just how far you can make it through before ultimately being destroyed.

The visuals are excellent and the game prides itself on being able to run on every iOS device available, even the original iPhone. That’s quite a feat and it really does run amazingly. Scores are tracked and can be compared locally, statewide, nationwide, and worldwide. At the time of this review I was ranked sixth in my state and plan on getting better. Definitely check this out.
