iPad App Video Review: Skyfire Web Browser

Jan 4, 2011

While Apple’s devices may be well-known for their smooth browsing experience and general ease of use, there has always been that one dealbreaker: Flash support. Apple flat-out refuses to use the platform. Whether it is a wise decision or not, it puts some users in a bad position when they need to view a video that hasn’t made it to HTML5 yet. This is where Skyfire comes in, the app takes Flash videos and converts them on the fly to make them playable on your device.

But that’s not all it does. The browser offers a ton of awesome social media features and even included a section for my Google Reader which surprised me.

Despite all of these awesome features, playing Flash was still a hassle for the most part. A very large chunk of my tests didn’t even recognize there was a video. I occasionally got one to work but I don’t really see it replacing my Safari browser since I would need to go out of my way to use it.

Definitely check it out, but I wouldn’t expect too much magic.
