Introduction to Hinduism – The Apps

Feb 27, 2010

I’m determined to study world religions while in line…TMZ and Mashable! will have to wait. So I dug up apps which are a good intro to Hindu religion and thought. While the apps listed below are not the most technologically advanced (it’s ancient religion, folks), they will ground you in groundlessness.

The Bhagavad Gita

The Bhagavad Gita is an epic poem from the Mahabharata that is Hinduism’s core sacred text. Learn the true meaning of karma through dialogue between Krishna and Arjuna. Arjuna is on the battlefield and uncertain about fighting his own cousins who have taken the side of evil, and Krishna explains to Arjuna his duties as a warrior and prince. A concise guide to Hindu theology.

The Ramayana

Browse The Ramayana in comic strip form right from your iPhone. One of the great epics of India. Tells the story of Rama whose wife Sita is abducted by the demon king of Lanka, Ravana. Explores human existence and the concept of dharma.

The Mahabharata

The cornerstone of Hindu mythology in comic strip form. It tells the story of an intense war fought between the five righteous Pandavas and their jealous cousins – the Kauravas. The Pandavas eventually win, proving that virtues like honesty, respect and duty never fail. It seeks to explain the relationship of the individual to society through dharma – duty, artha – purpose, kāma – pleasure or desire, and moksha – liberation.

Oxford Dictionary of Hinduism

At $14.99, this app’s for the serious scholar. 2,800 entries on everything from Tantra to temples. Really useful if you need to look up what a “brahman” or “veda” is.
