If there’s one thing WikiHow understand, it’s a girlfriend

You might not believe this, but the author of this iPhone app review was not exactly the best at talking to girls in high school. In that spirit, I get exactly what the How to Get a Girlfriend app is trying to do. In an age of information overload, it distills some fairly simple tips about staying relaxed and being yourself to a generation that loves its phones.

Although I’ve met plenty of grown men who could use this advice just as much, the app focuses on such basic conversation that it’s probably intended for the teen crowd. Broken into steps that read quickly and easily, it’s not a bad angle to focus on. Users can even browse an index so they can re-read their favorite tips without having to flip through the entire app.

The fact that everything is kept fairly light helps make How to Get a Girlfriend more charming than creepy. The subject matter of seduction walks such a fine line between innocent tips to give you courage to talk to a girl and trying to mentally dominate someone like you’re Mystery the Pickup Artist that it seems like a wise choice to keep the advice more earnest in nature.

Still, this dating advice app isn’t all flowers and first kisses. The inability to outright “favorite” a tip for later recall is disappointing. Even though the index is helpful, it seems like a no-brainer to be able to jump to a specific tip.

Visually, too, the app could use a tune-up. The grayed-out photo of the couple in the background is odd, but the comic sans font is outright unfortunate. Sure I like that this app isn’t sleazy, but reading anything in Comic Sans is a little hard to take seriously.

It’s also too bad that the app seems to focus solely on heterosexual couples. The focus is clearly on a man wooing  woman, when there are plenty of women who could use the advice to pick up a girl they have their eye on as well.

If you’re feeling down on your dating luck and need a reminder about what makes a charming man, then How to Get a Girlfriend – WikiHow might give you some renewed perspective, just don’t expect it to turn you into Don Juan.
