How To

Getting a new phone can be a daunting process, and not just in a financial sense; having to transfer all of the data from your old device to a new one sounds like it could take forever. All of those photos, apps, contacts, songs, and films that you downloaded throughout your old phone’s life now have to magically make their way over to your newest purchase. Luckily there are easier ways of doing it than just re-downloading everything, just by following these simple steps.

Using iCloud

This method won’t apply to everyone, simple because not everyone will have enough storage space within their iCloud. If you do subscribe to Apple’s service, though, then this is by far the most efficient way of transferring your data from one device to another.

  1. Connect your old device to Wi-Fi.
  2. From the home screen, go to Settings.
  3. Go to iCloud.
  4. Go to Backup.
  5. Tap the slider next to iCloud Backup so that it turns green.
  6. Tap Back Up Now.
  7. Make sure you stay connected to Wi-Fi throughout the process.

After the process is complete, turn on your new iPhone.

  1. Follow the steps after “Hello” appears on screen.
  2. Join a Wi-Fi network when it asks you to.
  3. When the Apps and Data screen appears, tap Restore From iCloud Backup, followed by Next.
  4. You’ll be asked to sign into iCloud using your Apple ID and Password.
  5. Select the backup you wish to use – it will probably be the latest one.
  6. Wait until your data is restored, making sure the device stays connected to Wi-Fi.
  7. All of your data should now have been transferred from your old phone onto your new one.

Using iTunes

Transferring data using iTunes is as easy as with iCloud, but just requires the use of an extra computer with the latest version of iTunes installed.

  1. Connect your old device to your computer.
  2. If it doesn’t do it automatically, open iTunes. Make sure it’s the latest version.
  3. Select your device from the iPhone logo.
  4. Under Backups, click Back Up Now.
  5. To make sure it’s been backed up correctly, go to iTunes Preferences and then Devices. Your device and the latest backup should be shown.
