Gucci iPhone app on right track, but buggy

I hope Gucci has its developers roll out an updated version of the luxury-brand’s new iPhone and iPod Touch app soon, because Gucci is the epitome of how brands should be using apps. However, Gucci’s current problem is that this app is severely unstable.

In addition to typical features such as a store locator, lookbooks, and news and events, Gucci offers iPhone-exclusive content. Users can take a look at the iPhone-exclusive Gucci Ronson, a limited edition sneaker designed by Mark Ronson. You have to order the shoe by phone, but I’d love to see in-app purchase capability in the future.

The Gucci Music Channel offers three hours of streaming music, and custom playlists from Ronson and Gucci creative director Frida Giannini.

The highlight of the Gucci app is Gucci Beats. Compiled by Ronson, Gucci Beats features loops, beats, drums and vocals for users to create their own mix with. After recording a beat, you can play it back on the app’s turntable and even scratch the record like a DJ. I love that Gucci is providing added value with this feature, but sadly, I was never able to fully explore the beats — it crashed every time. However, other users have said the app works flawlessly, so your mileage may vary.

For me, Gucci has the potential to be a killer app — most of the components are there, but until stability improves, Gucci can only score a middling rating.
