I had a personal trainer for a while whose best advice to me was to record what I ate on a daily basis.

I used a little notebook that fit in my pocket or purse, but figuring out the nutritional values for the stuff I was eating was a pain.

GoMealsHD (free) helps solve that problem. With a huge database of nutritional information from the big restaurant chains, as well as the ability to build your own food items (like the smoothies I make every morning that turn out to be as nutritious as a milk shake), tracking my meals should be easier.

Unfortunately, it’s only easier if I eat only at the big restaurant chains. Adding a single-ingredient food from the grocery store isn’t difficult, but building a food that contains several ingredients is a bit of a pain. Once I created them (by first adding the individual ingredients to my “plate” and then tapping “Create Favorite” and checking off the individual ingredients) and saved them as a favorite meal, I could add the meal to my plate.

Now that I have several favorites created, this process is easier.

With a  glance, I can see how many calories I’ve consumed that day, and how many I have left, as well as the percentage of carbs, protein and fats I’ve consumed. GoMealsHD also graphs food consumption for you, so you can evaluate patterns.

One of the best features is the restaurant finder. Search for restaurants by your location, choose one and peruse the menu and nutritional info. Great for deciding what you’re going to eat before you get there.
