Fresh iPhone Games for Mar. 24: Final Fantasy III, Superbrothers, Mr.Ninja

A couple of big games hit the iTunes App Store this morning, including a port of a DS remake of a member of the hugely popular Final Fantasy series. It’s not cheap, though, so if $16 is a little more than you’re looking to spend for Final Fantasy III, check out the beautiful and haunting Sword & Sworcery for iPad or the simple and addictive Mr. Ninja. We’ve got all the details you need below.

Final Fantasy III (iPhone, iPad) $15.99

A classic role-playing game in one of the biggest series in video games, Final Fantasy III was first released in 1990. It features the series’ first occurrence of its legendary job system and uses updated 3D graphics and a menu-based combat system in the old-school Japanese RPG style.

Final Fantasy III is an iOS port of the 2006 Nintendo DS version of the game. The port has Retina display compatibility and has been updated to support the iPhone’s touchscreen and virtual controls. This version also has exclusive story cutscenes you won’t see in other versions of Final Fantasy III.

Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP (iPad) $5.99

I’ve been hearing about the imminent release of Sword & Sworcery for a while now. The exploration adventure game has a heavy emphasis on its visual and audio style, featuring puzzles that work with music and an 8-bit look. As a wandering monk, you’ll move through a mythical world filled with magic to complete the game’s story.

Sword & Sworcery includes some integration with social media as well. You can interact with friends by Twitter to cooperate with one another and change your experience. The game is even effected by lunar phases. Sword & Sworcery is only available on the iPad for the moment, but is supposed to reach the iPhone next month.

Mr.Ninja (iPhone) $0.99

There are only two colors and some very simple graphics in Mr.Ninja, and it goes well with the game’s simple but addictive gameplay. You’ve got just one control — tapping the screen launches your ninja through the air, from one spinning planet to the other. The idea is to move left to right through the 2D world by jumping from island to island. But your goal isn’t just to get as far as you can: it’s to kill monsters.

Between each planet are monsters generally positioned in a line. The idea is to launch your ninja straight at the monsters so he can slice them up. The more monsters you can blast through without missing any, the larger your “chain” becomes, leading to a higher score. Once you’ve got a respectable score, you can see how you measure up by checking out leaderboards care of Game Center.
