Fresh iPhone Games for Jan. 5: Aralon (update), Papa Sangre, Broken Sword

An update to the already pretty giant role-playing game Aralon: Sword and Shadow grabbed our attention for today’s Fresh Games list, but so did Papa Sangre, a game that’s all about darkness, sound and horror. Read more about both (and more!) below.

Aralon: Sword and Shadow HD update (iPhone, iPad) $9.99

Crescent Moon has created a large and dynamic 3D role-playing game in Aralon, in which you play a hero on a quest in class fashion. It includes three different races to choose from when creating your character, plus four different character classes.

Aralon just received a big update, making lots of aspects of the game run better and adding a bunch of new features, including additional quests, crafting recipes, items to collect and content to explore. There are also additional enemies, more animations for characters, and a whole mess of other fixes to make Aralon even better.

Papa Sangre (iPhone) $6.99

One of the best parts about iPhone gaming is the innovation, and Papa Sangre reworks the video game formula by removing the video part. With only minimal visuals, the game is all about sound: while wearing headphones, you have to carefully travel through a darkened afterlife, avoid getting killed (even more) by monsters hidden in the dark, and rescue the soul of someone you love.

Papa Sangre has received a lot of attention for its creepiness and genuine scares, and it doesn’t disappoint. You’ll need headphones for the full experience, and iOS 4 or later to accommodate the app, but once you have those, you’ll find yourself immersed in one of the more unique experiences available in gaming.

Broken Sword: The Smoking Mirror Remastered (iPhone, iPad) $6.99

The sequel to Broken Sword: Secret of the Templars is another phenomenal point-and-click adventure title with lots of great storytelling, voice work and art direction. You’ll once again take on the role of helping French journalist Nico Collard unravel a mystery — this time concerning an ancient artifact she stumbles upon during her investigation of a drug gang.

Featuring great graphics and an interactive comic by Dave Gibbons of Watchmen fame, Smoking Mirror is a game that has really gone all-out. It includes Game Center support and even integrates with DropBox, allowing you to access saved games over multiple platforms.
