Fresh iPhone Games for Feb. 23: Tiny Wings, TurboGrafx-16 update, Rodent Rage!

If addictive, casual games are your forte, you’ll want to check out Tiny Wings and Rodent Rage!, a couple of simple but hard-to-master games that lead today’s Fresh Games. There’s also an update to TurboGrafx-16 Gamebox, a pack of emulated titles from the 1990s console that you can snag through in-app purchases. Keep reading for all the details below.

Tiny Wings (iPhone) $0.99

Watch yourself — Tiny Wings is an addictive little game that’s all about timing and high scores, but once you pick it up, it’ll be tough to put back down. You control a little bird with tiny wings (get it?) who wishes he could fly, so in order to get him into the air, you have to build up some momentum using the hilly terrain of the island setting around you. Your only controls are to touch the screen to withdraw the bird’s wings, making him heavier and dive down slopes, then release to have him flap them and take off into the air.

Tiny Wings is a 2D side-scroller not unlike an endless running game, but getting the timing of diving down the slopes of hills and releasing when moving upward takes a lot of practice. There are also objectives that you need to meet in order to rack up higher scores, like nailing five perfect ramps in a row on a certain island, or hitting the clouds overtop. Keeping your speed up with carefully timed taps is key to getting as far as possible — your time is up when night falls.

TurboGrafx-16 Gamebox update (iPhone, iPad) Free

Classic old-school games, emulated on your iPhone or iPad — that’s TurboGrafx-16 at its simplest. The app packs 21 games, one of which is free with 20 more that can be purchased through in-app purchase, and a recent update has thrown in five more. Until March 6, you can play one of the new games, Bonk’s Revenge, for free.

Gamebox packs a save system to help you stay up with your games when you play them, and four different screen modes and three control types, so you can find the most comfortable way to play. A different game demo is featured each day, to give you a taste of what they’re like before you pay for them.

Rodent Rage! (iPhone, iPad) $0.99

If you’ve played games like Fragger, Stupid Zombies and Angry Birds, you’ll get the gist of Rodent Rage! right away. Lab mice have gotten free of their cages, as well as a hold of a big bomb cannon, and they’re looking to inflict some payback on their scientific oppressors. The game is a physics puzzler in which your job is to determine the angle and strength of each shot, in attempts to blow up the scientists without accidentally killing your rodent brethren.

Rodent Rage is pretty bloody and violent, but in a cartoony kind of way. There are about 36 levels spread over three worlds, and unlockable mini-games you can play once you’ve been through the campaign levels. If you like humor and exploding people and animals in your physics puzzlers, you’ll have a good time with this one.
