Fresh iPhone Games for Feb. 15: Bomberman Dojo, Puckerz!, Paranormal Activity: Sanctuary

Fans of old-school grid-fighting action should check out Bomberman Dojo, a fresh 50 levels from the bomb-laying battle title. It leads today’s Fresh Games list, but it’s not all we have on offer. Puckerz! is a brick-breaking puzzler that’ll have you planning your shots in a sort of air hockey style, while Paranormal Activity is an augmented reality game that uses your iPhone’s camera and GPS, as well as your own neighborhood, to create its game world.

Bomberman Dojo (iPhone) $2.99

In this new version of Bomberman, you get 50 stages of the game’s classic top-down, grid-based bomb-planting action. Your goal: to gain the highest title of honor a bomberman can receive by besting all 50 levels. But if that’s too much structure for your style, you can opt for the game’s training mode, in which your goal is to compete for a high score that appears on the game’s OpenFeint and Game Center leaderboards.

Bomberman’s most interesting feature is its map editor that allows you to create levels of your own. Once you’re happy with the level you’ve created, you can upload it to the game’s servers for other players to try, or download user-made levels to play through yourself.

Puckerz! (iPhone, iPad) $0.99

An interesting twist on the brick breaker genre that mixes in the feel of air hockey, Puckerz! gives you a puck and puts you in the middle of a screen littered with blocks that need destroying and orbs that require collecting. When the puck stops, drag your finger away from it to get the ability to aim and determine how much force you want to use to fling it, then watch it bounce around the screen, destroying things.

Your goal on each board is to try to destroy all the bricks and collect all the orbs, which award you bonus points based on their color, within a certain time limit. There are obstacles in your way, though — fall into a “pocket” along the edges of the board or trigger a mine, for example, and you’ll incur a time penalty. Completing as much of the board as possible requires planning and careful shots, and Game Center and Open Feint are on hand to track your high scores.

Paranormal Activity: Sanctuary (iPhone) Free

Paranormal Activity has you hunting ghosts using your iPhone’s augmented reality capabilities, as well as its GPS and mapping features. When you fire it up, you’ll find “hell holes” surrounding your location on your iPhone’s map. Tap the holes and you can use your abilities to investigate and coax out ghosts, which you’ll need to find and capture using your phone’s camera.

You can go to actual real-world locations to complete missions and gain new abilities, and create “sanctuaries” at your favorite locations where demons can’t hurt you. If you’re not careful, though, you’ll be possessed by evil, allowing you to play the game from the demons’ side — creating hellholes and summoning more monsters to play against others.
