Fresh iPhone Games for Dec. 20: RAGE update, Sonic Spinball, Ninja Penguin Rampage

One of the cooler first-person shooters of the last few weeks, RAGE: Mutant Bash TV, has received a big content update to bring it up to speed with the iPhone 4 and iOS 4.2. If you haven’t downloaded it, you should give it a shot — it leads our Fresh Games list today, and is joined by a pair of other interesting games, including a Sega classic. Check all three out below.

RAGE update (iPhone, iPad) $0.99

RAGE is an on-rails first-person shooter in which players compete in a mutant-blasting game show in order to earn cash. It’s the first of several apps that tie into id Software’s upcoming PC first-person shooter of the same name. Mutant Bash TV comes with some strong graphics and both tilt and touch controls, as well as three levels filled with enemies for you to take on.

A big title update just dropped that adds gyroscopic controls for the newest generation iPhones, which should make RAGE’s great tilt-based controls even better. Also included with the update are achievements and leaderboards through Game Center, so you can track your progress against other players.

Sonic Spinball (iPhone, iPad) $2.99

This port of the Sega Genesis title of the same name from way back in the mid-1990s offers the same Sonic pinball action as the original title, but optimized for iOS devices with virtual touch controls. The game includes four different levels and three bonus stages that mix in standard pinball with Sonic platforming and combat against the evil Dr. Robotnik. Each level has a boss fight with Robotnik at the end, and the game includes a bunch of different items to collect throughout.

Ninja Penguin Rampage (iPhone, iPad) $0.99

As a penguin who’s also a ninja, you’re forced to take on evil eskimos in this 2D side-scroller, which has you doing a lot of beat ‘em up-style arcade play. You’ll be hacking your way through 15 different kinds of enemies, including some intense bosses, on your way through the game’s story and survival game modes.

Ninja Penguin Rampage includes achievements and leaderboards, and uses touch and gesture controls for doing battle throughout. It also allows you to gather up different kinds of weapons and upgrade your character to become a better fighter as you advance through the game.
