Fresh iPhone Apps for Mar. 8: Yobongo, Teach Me Sushi, Socialcam

Social networking fans have two cool new (free) apps to check out on today’s Fresh Apps list. There’s Yobongo, which combines Internet chatting with meeting people locally, and Socialcam, an app for sharing videos online, tagging friends in them, and browsing and commenting on videos from others. Read all about them, and more, below.

Yobongo (iPhone) Free

Yobongo uses your iPhone’s GPS capabilities to create a social networking experience that connects you to people in your general vicinity. It’s a chat app, but rather than taking you to some location-less online space, it allows you to join a chat session with whoever is around your area.

Using Yobongo isn’t just for local, public chat sessions — you can also start private conversations with the people you meet and use Facebook to set up your account. You can share your chats with friends by email and SMS messages, as well.

Teach Me Sushi iPad Edition (iPad) $8.99

Learn to make sushi with Teach Me Sushi for the iPad, which includes 15 different tutorial videos meant to help you learn to make every type of sushi roll, step by step. The app also includes lots of photos — more than 300 — to supplement the videos and get you making your own sushi in no time.

Teach Me Sushi also has your back when you’re not in the kitchen. It includes a shopping list calculator so you know what your sushi will cost you, and an equipment checklist so you don’t get all the ingredients home and realize you’re ill-equipped for the task at hand. Teach Me Sushi will even keep track of how long your rice has been cooking so you don’t burn it.

Socialcam (iPhone) Free

A social network just for video, Socialcam is an app not unlike Facebook that lets you quickly and easily share videos with friends, as well as see comments and leave your own on the videos of others. You can record videos of your own and watch the videos of your friends, and the size and length of your clips is limited only by the space you’ve got available on your iPhone.

Socialcam lets you tag your friends in photos (just like Facebook) and will notify you if you’re tagged in a clip. It also allows you to record and upload at the same time to get videos online quickly, or record to your device and upload later with an Internet connection. And you can spread your videos to other networks by sharing on Facebook and Twitter, too.
