Fresh iPhone Apps for Jan. 11: Google Mobile update, Precorder, Fly Delta update

The already useful Google Mobile app has just gotten a big new update, adding to the capabilities of its Google Goggles search function — like the ability to solve Sudoku puzzles. Read all about it, plus a couple more handy fresh apps we’ve discovered, in our list below.

Google Mobile update (iPhone) Free

Google Mobile already has a lot of cool usual search functions — typing and voice search features, as well as Google Goggles, which will search based on photos you take with your iPhone’s camera. A big new update from Google merges functions from Google Voice, as well as adds new capabilities to the Googles feature.

Goggles now has the capability to recognize U.S. print advertisements that were printed after August 2010, letting you snap a photo of an ad and returning search results based on what’s seen. Another cool feature: snap a photo of a Sudoku puzzle with Google Goggles and it’ll solve it. Maybe not the most useful feature, but kind of an amazing one, nonetheless.

Precorder (iPhone) $1.99

The big downfall of taking video with your iPhone’s camera is that it requires you to push the record button. Trying to catch something happening is a losing battle, especially if you see a quick event taking place right in front of you: you’ve got to unlock the phone, open the app, his the record button, and wait for the app to start pulling down video. Precorder makes video recording a little easier by giving you a buffer period around when you start shooting.

When you open Precorder, the app starts recording video even before you start shooting — but only a few seconds’ worth. Hit record and the app starts shooting video, but it also adds on those extra few seconds before the recording started, eliminating some of that period in which you wish you were shooting but the phone hasn’t reacted yet.

Fly Delta update (iPhone) Free

Next time you’re flying Delta, you can use its app to check your flight status, download your boarding passes in some cases, search flight schedules and check the weather at your airport. It’s a pretty handy app for keeping up on your flight information, but a new update makes it even more useful.

Now, if your flight is cancelled or misconnected, you can rebook it right from the app by searching through potential flight options. You can see if you’ve been rebooked on a new flight automatically, and share your new flight details online with others.
