Fresh iPhone Apps for Feb. 17: Inception: App Edition, Twonky Mobile, Split

Warner Bros. has had a pretty good idea — DVDs on the iPhone and iPad. Well, that’s not quite what Inception: App Edition is, but it’s pretty close, giving you the full film verison of Inception along with all kinds of bonus materials, all of which you can preview for free. Get more details (including the in-app purchase price) below, and while you’re down there, keep reading for a couple of other apps we think are worth checking out.

Inception: App Edition (iPhone, iPad) Free (with $11.99 in-app purchase for full version)

Warner Bros. is trying out a new way to distribute its movies digitally to the iPhone and iPad, and the first movie it’s trying the system out with (along with The Dark Knight) is Inception. You get a free sampler of what’s available in the paid version of the app, which includes a download of the full movie and all kinds of extras. The free version gives you the first five minutes of the film (which you can download or stream over 3G and Wi-Fi), as well as things like poster and concept art and music.

When you download Inception: App Edition, you’re basically getting an iOS-only copy of the DVD. Even in the free version, you can see different art from the film and listen to selections from the soundtrack. Buying the full version nets you three never-before-released tracks from composer Hans Zimmer and behind the scenes content and videos.

Twonky Mobile (iPhone, iPad) $2.99

Downloading Twonky Mobile lets you turn your iPhone or iPad into a remote control that can stream content from your local Wi-Fi network to your iOS device or to other devices, like an Xbox 360 or a Sony Blu-Ray player. It allows you full control over content and where it appears, as long as everything is connected to your Wi-Fi.

Stream photos on your TV from your computer or from your iPhone. Use Twonky to watch video you shot on your iOS device on your computer. You can also queue multiple pieces of media from your iOS device to play one after another.

Split (iPhone) $0.99

Split is a handy app developed to help you split up the bill after a meal with friends — not to split it equally, since any calculator can do that, but to split it unequally. The app tries to simplify the whole process of determining the number of people at the restaurant with you and who ate what, in order to make bill-splitting as quick and easy as possible.

With Split, you visually input the number of people at the table and add actual placeholder images for each. Then you assign them all the cost of the food that they ate, and Split does all the necessary tip and tax math to figure out who owes what. It’s an intuitive and very easy to use app.
