Fresh iPhone Apps for Dec. 30: Skype update, Wigglehop, SYNC Destinations

The day Skype users have been waiting for has finally arrived: the service now allows users to make video chat calls mobile-to-mobile for free, over a 3G or Wi-Fi connection. Skype’s big update tops our Fresh Apps list for today, but we also have a couple of interesting (and free) offerings for you as well.

Skype update (iPhone, iPad) Free

Used to be, users of the Skype mobile app could use the voice over Internet provider to call Skype users on PC for free, but for making calls to other mobile phone users, you had to pay. That’s not the case anymore — Skype has been updated to allow free Skype-to-Skype calls, on Wi-Fi and 3G, no matter where you or the person you’re calling is.

It’s a pretty great update to a service that was already great in a lot of ways. Skype allows users to send text messages and make video calls to one another using the front-facing cameras on the iPhone 4 and the iPad. You can also send text messages and make calls to landlines and mobile phones that aren’t using Skype, but you’ll have to pay by the minute.

Wigglehop to the Movies (iPhone, iPad) Free

Wigglehop works to stand apart from other movie-finder apps by providing a more personal experience. It still does the same thing that many similar apps do — help you find movie showtimes in your area — but the app asks you to do some customizing first in order for it to provide you the best results.

The app works like a possible itinerary of movie times. Add in your favorite theaters and you can compile lists of movies you might want to see and their showtimes. Then you can set yourself alarms for when those movies are playing, or pull open the app when you’re ready and browse the pre-set list of showtimes you set up in advance.

SYNC Destinations (iPhone, iPad) Free

This free app pairs with the on-board directions systems found in Ford cars and trucks with the company’s SYNC hardware installed. Destinations links up with your SYNC account to allow you to plan your route ahead of time and take control of the software in your car, even when you’re not in your car.

Destinations mostly seems to concern itself with allowing you to make decisions about when you want to head out and where you want to go. The app will show you what times of day to expect the most traffic on your route, as well as create routes to try and dodge that traffic. It’ll also allow you to create and save destinations, which you can access from your SYNC account, and gives you turn-by-turn directions.
