Fresh iPhone Apps for Aug. 8: eBay Instant Sale, Vonage Time to Call, Temple Run, Emberwind

Start the week by unloading your old dusty electronics with the help of our leading fresh app, eBay Instant Sale. The app lets you sell off broken or dated electronics instantly, if you like the price. You can use the money you make to complete some cheap international calls with Vonage Time to Call, or purchase some games: Temple Run, a fast and hectic third-person endless runner, or platformer Emberwind, which stars a gnome who bashes bad guys with a cane.

eBay Instant Sale (iPhone, iPad) Free

Got old electronics lying around, collecting dust? You can unload them for a wholesale price or recycle them with eBay Instant Sale, an app that lets you look up your old electronics and mark out their condition, then receive an instant wholesale offer for them. The app is eBay-branded, but it’s not an eBay auction app, so don’t expect people to battle for your items – but you will get a fast price and eBay will send you a shipping label if you’re happy with the offer.

EBay works with AllTechWholesale for the project in order to give users a place to get rid of their old technology responsibly, and even some broken devices still have a cash value. The app isn’t perfect, and some might find the cash offered to be a little low. But if you’re looking for a way to get rid of electronics quickly and maybe get a little scratch for the effort, eBay Instant Sale is worth a few minutes of your time.

Vonage Time to Call (iPhone, iPad) Free

If you make a lot of international calls, you’ll want to check out Vonage Time to Call, an app that gives you low international rates and bills you right through your iTunes account. You don’t need to be any sort of Vonage customer, and you pay per call – pay around $1.99 or less and you can make a 15-minute call to more than 100 countries, and there are another 90 countries covered for between $2.99 and $9.99. All the calls work on Wi-Fi, and in the U.S. and Canada, you can also use your 3G data connection.

Vonage Time to Call also has a bonus running for early adopters right now, in which you’ll get rollover minutes if you have extras left over on your calls. You also get a free call to one of those 100 countries covered in the $1.99 rate as part of a limited time offer.

Temple Run (iPhone, iPad) $0.99

Temple Run does a pretty good job of differentiating itself from other running-type games in the App Store by turning the game’s perspective viewpoint from side-scrolling to a third-person over-the-shoulder perspective. The game places you in the role of an unfortunate treasure hunter who has stolen an idol from a temple, and now must run full speed to escape being killed by the temple’s guardian apes. Using touch controls, you’ll jump over or slide under obstacles and turn sharp corners for as long as you can survive without messing up.

Along the way in Temple Run, you’ll gather coins that can be used in the game’s shop to unlock power-ups you can gather up during playthroughs. These can make things a little easier and more interesting – one gives you an extra life, for example – but the real excitement of the game is in the many quick moves you’ll have to make using the swipe controls.

Emberwind (iPhone, iPad) $0.99

A platformer in the style of games like Super Mario Bros., Emberwind puts players in the role of a gnome called Kindle who is charged with saving his people from an invasion of gremlins. To this end, he mostly just whacks gremlins with his cane and collects all kinds of things, like coins and acorns, while traveling through various levels. For players who like exploration and tracking down every secret hidden in a game, Emberwind is a good choice.

The game is pretty easily played with virtual controls, providing Kindle with lots of different unlockable special moves, like dashing, shooting acorns, rolling into a ball and others. With a great art style (ported from the game’s PC counterpart), a huge campaign and some massive boss battles, there’s a lot on offer to platform game lovers.
