Fresh iPhone Apps for Aug. 1: Threshold, Pocket Zoo HD, Hungribles, Necrorun

Start the week by saving a little money with the help of Threshold, our leading Fresh App, designed to monitor your data usage and help keep you in the black on your monthly cellular plan. Then you can use the data you save with Threshold’s help to watch live video of zoo animals on your iPad with Pocket Zoo HD. If games are your thing, check out physics puzzler Hungribles and endless runner Necrorun, in which you get to take on the role of Death.

Threshold (iPhone, iPad) $3.99

Data management is Threshold’s game. The app monitors your iOS device’s 3G data usage in order to help save you money by avoiding going over your monthly allotment. You can see breakdowns by day, week and month of your usage and the times and days that your usage is the highest, as well as receive customized alerts.

Threshold can also help you cut down on your usage by allowing you to set up “data zones” that stop your device from sucking 3G data when you leave a certain area, or set a “threshold” for the maximum amount of data you want to allow your device to use, as high as 90 percent. Threshold also has a free, ad-supported version if you’d rather not pay.

Pocket Zoo HD (iPad) $3.99

Go to the zoo without leaving…wherever you might be, with the help of Pocket Zoo HD. The iPad-only app allows you to check out live video of more than 30 animals straight from zoos around the world, as well as more than 200 videos of animals that can teach you all kinds of things about all kinds of creatures.

Pocket Zoo is loaded with “fun facts” that have been approved by actual teachers, helping to make it educational, and it also features illustrations and photos, organized inside a virtual zoo. If you’re an animal lover or looking to learn, Pocket Zoo is a great addition to your app library.

Hungribles (iPhone, iPad) $0.99

Hungribles is yet another physics-based puzzle game in which players use the manipulation of gravity and geometry to send objects bouncing around levels. But Hungribles separates itself from the pack by having solid physics, hand-drawn graphics and a high cuteness factor. In each puzzle, you’ll shoot bits of mushrooms toward various animals, trying to satisfy their hunger in order to pass each level.

Bonus points are scored for bouncing the balls through the level several times and for grabbing special objects on each level. Each animal also emits a gravitational field that will attract the balls, so you’ll need to plan each shot carefully to get it to go where you want it.

Necrorun (iPhone) $0.99

An 8-bit endless running game, Necrorun has a cool look and an interesting twist – you play as Death, warring against medieval knights and nature itself to do your job. You have but two controls: a button that makes your pale horse leap over pits and obstacles, and the ability to tap on the screen anywhere to aim and fire a blast of energy from your spear that can destroy obstacles and enemies.

The longer you run and the more stuff you destroy, the higher your score. In addition to the regular campaign in which you’ll try to ratchet up your score as high as you can get it, Necrorun also includes a challenge mode, in which you’ll earn medals for accomplishing tasks, and a timed trials mode.
