Free Apps for Diabetics: Carb Counting & Blood Sugar Logging

Apr 30, 2011

Both my teenage brother and my dad have diabetes. We have tried out several apps that are supposed to help diabetics keep track, carb count and lookup food.

Carb Counting with Lenny

Carbohydrate (Carb) counting is an essential skill for managing diabetes. Although this app is geared towards children, I’d say it’s a great app for all ages. It divides the foods in to 5 food groups: starches, fruit/veg, dairy, meats & fats, other. You can look carb values for many basic foods and then you can add your own in with a description and a picture. There is interactive game feature to test our carb knowledge.

Lenny the Lion Carb Counting Application- LAUNCHED!!!

Download FREE from iTunes App Store. More information at: Lenny the Lion, an ambassador for children’s diabetes education, will soon launch his very first App to to make CARB COUNTING FUN AND EASY!!! Learn carb values in hundreds of foods, customize your own food guide and also play carb games!

WaveSense Diabetes Manager

This is a great app for managing diabetes. It is basically a log to keep track of blood-sugar levels, food intake and insulin taken. It has a built in calendar so you don’t have to put the time and date in, that is nice. There is also an email button so you can email the last 7, 14, or 30 days of logging to your doctor.

bant – A diabetes app for the ePatient

The bant app boasts that you can “Enter your readings with a single swipe. Store it instantly to your Google Health account. Share your experience with the diabetes community through Twitter.” We tried to use it and it was difficult to navigate, we couldn’t find a place to enter your blood sugar reading. It looks very professional but missing user experience. Also, I don’t know why you would share your blood sugar reading to twitter.

Diabetes Log

Logging on this app is like logging on paper so there really wouldn’t be a difference other than you don’t have to carry around a little book. You can show your logs in 7, 14, 3, 30, & 90, day periods. In general it is a bit hard to navigate. My brother (even though he is a teenager) preferred Carb Counting with Lenny over the basic features currently available in this app. Although the developer does say new features are coming soon.
