Topping this week’s best new iOS apps list is an old favorite, as Foursquare received a major update that is well worth checking out. The update finds the check-in app focused on social commenting rather than just checking in to places. The other apps on our list involve fun ways to find activities around town, keep your life in order, shoot videos and listen to music.
Foursquare Update (Free)
Foursquare has always had a fairly intuitive design, but if you still hadn’t downloaded the app because you weren’t into how it looked, it might be time to give it another go. The Foursquare app has undergone a major redesign that promotes more interaction between friends. Users can comment and like a friend’s check-in status. It’s easier than ever to look at photos related to check-ins. Check it out.
Any.DO (Free)
If you need a little assist keeping your life in order, Any.DO promises to help. You can create an agenda and organize it by swiping your finger across the app, and easily mark when items on your task list are complete. You can also share your to-do lists with friends in the hopes they might help out a bit, too. Any.DO (already a hit on Android) also supports voice-dictation so you can simply tell the app what tasks you have to accomplish instead of typing them out manually.
Pixorial (Free)
Every great director has to start somewhere, so why not begin with Pixorial? The app lets you take videos on your iPhone with real-time video effects. Pixorial comes with 17 adjustable effects and you can purchase additional effects for a few extra bucks. Pixorial also lets users upload longer videos to its servers unlike other video recording apps with time limits of a minute or less. Videos shot on Pixorial can also be shared to Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and other social media sites with the tap of a button.
Eventster (Free)
Evenster claims to be like Pandora for events, but really it’s more like the classic photo rating website, Hot or Not. Users can rate events on whether they’re worth going to, and then when someone new uses Eventster they’ll see the top events as voted on by the rest of the crowd. So in theory, users won’t have to slog through a bunch of boring events to get to the good stuff, as those are already be pushed to the front of the app. Events can be filtered by keyword, location, date and category, too, so users can find just the kind of activity they’re looking for.
Songza Update (Free)
Pandora Radio and other streaming apps are a great way to listen to music, but not always the best when they’re playing songs you’re not in the mood to listen to. Songza is designed specifically to avoid that conundrum by only playing sets for certain moods. You just tell the app what sort of situation you want to hear music for, and Songza does the rest. It’s a real treat, and now that it’s available on the iPad, it’s a little more party-friendly.
