Football is a game that progresses in quick, action-filled bursts. Aside from replay reviews, TV timeouts and Lovie Smith press conferences, the sport rarely has boring stretches.

So what Pulse2 did with the Football Glossary app is no small feat — they made football boring. I don’t expect every football app to be Madden 2010, but when you charge money for a dictionary, you’d better have something in it to back that up.

The 99-cent Football Glossary is a very straightforward app — it’s a collection of football terms, nothing more and nothing less. You can either scroll through the entries or search for a specific one, and you are given the option of bookmarking individual terms.

The terms range from those that are rule-related, such as false start and holding, to more specific ones such as formations like the 4-3 defense and wishbone. There are even entries for football slang words such as tweener and dual-threat quarterback.

The app is pretty up to date, more recent things like the A-11 offense and the Wildcat formation are included. The definitions aren’t too long or overly impressive, but they do a good enough job of explaining.

I have to hand it to Football Glossary — it’s hard to argue with its choice of terms or the amount of them. Still, I don’t know how popular the app will be. One could argue the free Wikipedia app or simply using Safari will do the job just as well.

If you’re new to football and like the idea of having all the terms at your fingertips, then by all means this app is for you. But until we see some more features or flash, I don’t see this one breaking into any top download lists.
