Find a furry or feathered friend with Petfinder.com’s app

Whether you’re looking for a dog, cat, rabbit, bird or maybe even a pony, there’s an app for that. Petfinder.com: Adopt Pets brings its database of animals looking for loving homes to iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

Petfinder features its standard web search engine along with a section of “Happy Tails” stories from real Petfinder users who brought home furry kids they found through the site. To start searching, you’ll probably want to use the GPS tool to locate the pets nearest you. Although the app displays the closest results first, it doesn’t restrict its results geographically, which is the app’s biggest drawback. It’s not always clear how far away an animal is, and that could lead to some potential distance-induced heartache.

Users can browse all pets nearby, or filter their search by breed, age, gender and animal size. Search results are displayed as thumbnails, or you can tap a photo to see a large version, and swipe through all the results. The photos looked great on my iPhone 4, and even though I’m not actively searching for a pet, I can see myself checking the app daily. If you see an animal you like, you can use the star to save it to your favorites list, or share the listing over Facebook, Twitter or email. More information about your prospective pet is available in the “Details” section.

I did experience some slow loading speeds in Petfinder and the occasional snag that prevented the app from finding any nearby pets, but an additional refresh solved that issue. So, download Petfinder.com: Adopt Pets, and start searching. If you find your perfect pet, use the location information to directly call the shelter and find the new friend waiting for you.
